so far, i haven't formed much of an opinion of it. a couple of the tracks seem pretty annoying to me, but "scandalous," "lying through your teeth," "million dollar decision," "shot in the back," and "egyptian musk" are real highlights.
for me, though, none compare to the last song, "k horse." it seems a lot less organized and angrier by far than anything they've done yet, and it works amazingly well. i'm kind of in love with it right now. anyway, enjoy and feel better soon.
a couple of listens later, and a few more thoughts on Popaganda.
one of the songs i originally found a little irritating, "she's not it," has really grown on me a lot. among the message boarders, it and "curious" seem to be the two least favorite, but "she's not it" i think is really catchy and maybe a little deeper than the standard pop song it sounds like. i get the feeling that it's kind of a "beating heart baby part 2," from a jaded, cynical perspective. this is the other side, after the initial excitement wore off and two people are left realizing that they're wrong for each other. really fascinating, i think.
"laughing at you" i still find kind of annoying at parts, but it too has grown on me and the chorus gets stuck in my head really easily.
upon further listening, i've also come to appreciate "egyptian musk" even more. it comes off to me as a similar song in theme to glassjaw's "radio cambodia," but filtered through the cynicism of head automatica's "king caesar." whereas the former is a very immediate, almost desparate and slightly naive reaction from a new yorker to the events surrounding and following 9/11, and the latter seems to be about being disillusioned with so-called authority figures in their handling of the response to 9/11 and the war in iraq, etc., "egyptian musk" is more cynical and bitter, having seen the price being paid for an unjust war.
"shot in the back" is still a great song, but would have been better served keeping it structured the same as the demo that leaked, with the buildup to the bridge where he sings "i would do anything to tell you..." it flowed better and made the "shot in the back by my fear" part far more climactic.
on a similar note, "nowhere fast" (formerly oxycontin, oxycotton, and other various titles playing off the the name of the opiate) sounds great but would have been a little better had they kept the little scat thing daryl does, like when he does it live.
"cannibal girl" has also become a personal favorite the more i've listened to it. it has a very loose, organic feel to it which could have been hampered by the great-sounding production but it remained intact. awesome, catchy song.
and, as always, i'm enamored with "k horse" but now realize that it's probably the glassjaw fan in me missing the old days. still a great song though.
overall, i think there are a surprising number of songs on this album that are (lyrically, at least, if not always musically) far darker than decadence. it's definitely a more cynical album, and i think in many ways more mature. i haven't decided if i like it better or not, nor do i really care to. i think it's a really good album. and this comment is really, really long. sorry.

p.s. i can't wait until the album is released for real so people will finally stop holding out on leaking the 30 or so demos that didn't make it to the album.
